Troubleshooting Commercial Stove Gas Valves

From time to time, you may find it necessary to turn to make adjustments or repairs to your stove. Common repairs for stoves and other appliances may require that you shut off the gas for the stove. If you ever detect a faint odor of gas, should be immediately close the gas valve. This is why it is a good idea to always know where the gas shutoff valve is located.

In many countries, building codes require that the gas shutoff valve to be located within 6 feet of the appliance and in the same room. Shutoff valves for standard gas stoves or ranges typically are located behind the appliance.

Checking the Pilot Light on Commercial Stoves

If the stove is not working, and has a pilot light system, check to see if the pilot light is on. If not, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight the pilot light. It may take a few seconds after lighting the pilot light for the main valve to have enough power to stay open. If the thermocouple or thermopile is not generating enough voltage to keep the safety valve open you will need to replace it. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you may need to replace the entire gas valve.

Replacing a Stove Gas Valve on Commercial Stoves

Locate the gas inlet pipe and turn off the gas flow to the stove by turning the gas shutoff valve handle one-quarter turn.

Before doing any work on the stove, turn on one of the burners to confirm that the gas has been turned off. If the stove has an electric cord, be sure there is no smell of gas, and unplug the cord from the electrical outlet.

Stove burner gas valves are fairly easy to replace. By removing the top plate, you can access them easily. The burners can be removed to access the valve. Loosen the valve to be replaced with a wrench and screw it out. If the valve has a pilot adjustment valve on the side, you may need to remove it to unscrew the valve.

Put some pipe thread sealer on the treads of the new valve, and screw it back into position, tightening hand tight.  Replace the burners, turn the gas back on and light the pilots. Using two wrenches, one to hold the valve the other to turn the orifice, turn on the burner and adjust the valve until the flame is blue, and has as little yellow flame as possible
